Student Status
Student Status recognises the qualities associated with success as a post compulsory student.
The purposes for doing this include:
- A method for keeping students informed about their progress. All aspects of college life will be considered in determining student status (e.g. academic achievement, contributions to the college community and behaviour).
- Reporting to students and parents about progress.
- A system for self development and improvement.
Key Elements
The responsibility for maintaining and improving student status belongs to the student. The student is responsible for keeping evidence of achievements during the year. Cultural, sporting, leadership and service roles need to be documented in a diary.
It is the student's responsibility to claim Advanced Standing from their advocate.
Each student will have an assigned teacher who will work closely with him/her to achieve success. This teacher is known as the Advocate.
The Advocate is an essential part of a student's development and support system. The advocate will meet informally and formally with his/her students. Formal meetings will provide the opportunity for the student to demonstrate their achievements during the year. Using prescribed criteria the Advocate may recommend the student for Advanced Standing status.
The Advocate is the first point of referral for concerns about students.
Student Development and Support Services
Students may be referred to Student Development and Support Services when there is a breach of the Code of Conduct, Enrolment Agreement or when attendance requirements have not been met. When Good Standing is lost a process for restoring Good Standing status is negotiated and commences.
Diaries
The Student Diary will be an important personal organizational and management tool. The diaries will also be used for recording achievements, occasions when they do not attend class, submission dates and special events.
Diaries need to be taken to meetings with the Advocate.
Good Standing
Good Standing is granted on enrolment and is held while the student maintains satisfactory attendance and all conditions of the Enrolment Agreement and Code of Conduct are met.
Advanced Standing
Students who satisfy the criteria for Advanced Standing can claim it from their Advocate if the proof of achievement can be produced. If the claim is accepted the Advocate will reassess the student at the end of the year and formally approve Advanced Standing if the criteria continue to be fulfilled. Students who achieve Advanced Standing will be formally recognized in reports, college references and at Graduation. Students will also receive a Certificate of Advanced Standing that can be placed in the student's portfolio.
Students are provided with a Mandurah Senior College Diary at the commencement of each year, the diary contains detailed documentation in relation to Student Status.
