Student Council

MANDURAH SENIOR COLLEGE STUDENT COUNCIL CONSTITUTION

Rational:
The Student Council is the essential link between college management and the student population. The Student council needs to seek input from all student members and represent all groups equitably.

Duties:
  • The Student Council will represent the students and present their ideas and suggestions to the College Management through the Student Development and Support Services Manager.
  • The Student Council will organise initiatives and activities for the benefit of the student population.
  • The Student Council members will be part of the Student Services team and aid in the support process for students.
  • The Student Council develops the MSC Dress Code and decides on what items are to considered official MSC dress.
  • The Student Council members must regularly attend meetings.
  • The Student Council Members will become managers of student committees supporting their initiatives and programs. The managers will be able to nominate student committee members for progress towards Advanced Standing.
Membership:
The student Council will consist of ten, year eleven students. There will be no predetermined leaders and each member will be considered an equal. The term of office will start in semester two and continue until semester two the following year.

Voting:
All members of the Student Council and Student Services staff have an equal vote.

Selection Of The Student Council:
Positions will be advertised to students in term two each year. Students will be given two weeks to submit their written application. The sitting Student Council members will assist in the short-listing of applicants. Short-listed applicants will take part in a Forum (potential members give a short address and work on a series of group workshop activities) and the sitting members will assist Student Services staff to select the new Student Council.

Resignations and Replacement of Student Council Members:
Where a Student Council Member resigns or loses their membership, the position will be offered to the highest ranked unsuccessful applicant from the selection process or new applicants will be called for.

Meetings:
  • Formal meetings will be held weekly. When a major college event or holiday may prevent this, notice will be given about an alternative meeting date. These meetings will be conducted by an elected student Chairperson and minutes recorded by an elected student Secretary. The Chairperson will seek agenda items from student and staff members one week prior to the meeting.
  • Informal meetings will be conducted on an as required basis. A staff member will chair these meetings.
Conditions of membership:
  • Student Councillors must maintain Good Standing. If a member loses Good Standing they must resign.
  • Student Councillors cannot use their title or position when addressing the media, unless it is part of an official duty.
  • Student Councillors must regularly attend meetings and offer apologies when they cannot attend.
  • Student Councillors must represent the views of the wider student population and not drive their own personal agendas.
