Student Code of Conduct

The staff of Mandurah Senior College and Challenger TAFE take pride in the high standard of learning and training opportunities they provide and invite students to work in partnership with them to share responsibility for:

DEVELOPING AN EFFECTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT BY:
  • Attending and participating in all classes, lectures, workshops and laboratory sessions.
  • Arriving on time for all appointments and classes, and remaining in the class for the duration of the session.
  • Using only equipment supplied or approved by the College / lecturer.
  • Ensuring all electronic devices (including mobile phones and iPods) are turned off and in bags during class.
  • Completing and presenting as required all assessment tasks.
  • Avoiding plagiarism (making reference to an author's work without acknowledging the author, including scanned and electronically copied material.Lecturer's can advise how to correctly reference work) and cheating so that no unapproved assistance in the preparation of any work including assignments, tests, reports and examinations for which you are to be assessed is given or received.
  • In group work, contributing equally in preparation of work for assessment.
  • (In the case of Challenger TAFE students ) ensuring only people enrolled in a class attend that class unless prior permission has been obtained from the section's Program Manager (e.g. children on campus). (In the case of Mandurah Senior College students), not inviting onto campus any person without the permission of the administration.
These points apply unless otherwise stipulated by teachers or lecturers who are responsible for establishing appropriate learning behaviour in their classes.

ACHIEVING A HEALTHY AND SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT MAXIMISES THE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS BY:
  • Wearing appropriate protective clothing and securing hair, jewellery and clothing to avoid accidents.
  • Engaging in safe and co operative behaviour in classrooms, laboratories, workshops, in other parts of the campus premises and while on excursions or work experience organised by either College.
  • Keeping food and drinks out of classrooms, laboratories or workshops.
  • Abstaining from drugs, alcohol and other substances that may affect co ordination, response rate and/or judgement to the extent that the safety and effectiveness of the learning environment is compromised.
Note: This includes prescription drugs that may affect performance.
Teachers, lecturers or technicians will provide specific instructions for your area of study.

MAINTAINING SERVICEABLE FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT BY:
  • Reporting of breakage and/or faults with equipment to teachers, lecturers, or the campus administration.
  • Leaving classrooms, workshops and laboratories neat and tidy after classes, lectures and tutorials ensuring equipment and tools are cleaned and correctly stored.
  • Accessing the computer network and equipment only for approved purposes, not allowing others access through your passwords, not using or installing unlicensed software on College computers and checking all discs for viruses before use on College computers.
  • Parking in areas designated for student parking, and always driving safely and carefully in parking areas and access road.
  • In the case of Challenger TAFE students, smoking is restricted to designated areas. No smoking is permitted on Mandurah Senior College property or any shared facilities. Using sporting equipment only in areas around the College that have been designated specifically for sporting activities and only when this does not interfere with any organised activity.
ENSURING THAT EVERYONE IS TREATED EQUALLY AND WITHOUT HARASSMENT (i.e. any verbal, visual and/or physical behaviour, which causes offence or distress to others), BY;
  • Refraining from any activities that may be construed as harassment.
  • Reporting any incident of harassment observed on the campus whether caused by staff or students.
  • Showing respect and consideration for other students, staff and campus visitors.
SUPPORT OF COLLEGE STAFF

All MSC staff are carefully selected for their expertise so that Students may rely on their capacity to interpret these responsibilities and other campus policies in a way that suits each student's particular instructional needs. Our staff will always aim to provide students with the appropriate advice as to the behaviours that constitute an effective teaching and learning environment that is;
  • safe and clean,
  • comfortable and free from distraction,
  • equitable and accessible to everyone,
  • without harassment or threat,
  • respectful of your need for confidentiality, and
  • an appropriate model of workplace behaviours and practices.
Both Colleges have the greatest confidence in their staff and will support the decisions they make in order to achieve the best learning experience for their students.

Notes:
  1. Neither Mandurah Senior College nor Challenger TAFE are limited to the statements in this document. Both organisations have more detailed policy statements on these and a range of other issues in their policy manual. From time to time such policies and directions may be applied when appropriate to a particular circumstance. Clarification of policy on any issue can be obtained by direct request to any College Manager.
  2. Rolls are maintained and may be used for assessment purposes as well as for determining entitlement for financial support.
  3. All Challenger TAFE staff are bound by our Staff Code of Conduct, Quality Policy, and Customer Service Charter. Copies of these may be obtained from any staff member on request. If you have any comments to make about the College or its staff, either positive or otherwise, you may do so using a Customer Comment form. These are available from all staff members and are displayed in administration centres and other public locations at all campuses.
  4. Students who do not observe appropriate conduct may be excluded by staff from participating in class and may, in extreme cases, be subject to other penalties and restrictions including being denied access to the campus. Offences likely to lead to automatic suspension and to be reported to the relevant authorities are:
  • Property damage
  • Physical assault
  • Theft
  • Misuse of campus equipment or funds
  • The carrying of any form of weaponry (i.e. items which are specifically designed to cause harm to others or damage property) on campus property
  • Serious verbal assaults or threats of violence
  • The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of drugs on campus
  • Consumption of alcohol, on campus or at any activity unless, in the case of students over 18, specific authorisation is given by administration.
