Advocacy System
The Advocacy System is a College priority and forms the foundation for the general pastoral care of students. All students will be linked to a staff member who acts as an Advocate for the student.
Each staff member will work closely with approximately 18 students and in most cases the staff member will also be one of the students subject teachers. A schedule for formal meetings is put in place for each student to allow the Advocate and student to discuss general progress, attendance, achievements and other issues.
The Advocate is the first point of contact for parents if they wish to discuss general progress or other issues.
This system allows students and parents to develop a close working relationship with one member of staff who can then in turn provide personalised assistance or, where necessary, make a referral to Student Development and Support Services.
The Advocate's role is to provide a service. Students should treat this service as an important opportunity to aid in their development.
ADVOCACY MEETINGS
The Advocate will be one of the student's subject teachers Appointments will be made for Students to meet with their Advocate. Students can also request a meeting with their Advocate. Students at this college are obliged to attend these meetings. Meetings are an opportunity for students to discuss progress in subjects, career and tertiary goals, achievements ands participation in extra-curricular activities and progress towards Advanced Standing. Any concerns or problems Students may have can be raised with the Advocate. Records are kept of meetings.
The Advocate will contact parents at different stages of the year, will sign reports, write references for year 12 students and nominate students for Advanced Standing.
STUDENT STATUS
All students commence the academic year with Good Standing status. It is our aim that most students achieve Advanced Standing status by the end of the academic year. The advocate has a key role in the process working with the student to identify and record major achievements and extra-curricular participation. A student can claim Advanced Standing status from their Advocate when the prescribed criteria have been satisfied. Student who achieve Advanced Standing status will be awarded a certificate for their portfolio, and have the achievement recognised at College Graduation and in College references.
